Dear St. Gregory family,
I have wonderful news to share
with you from St. Gregory! Nearly a year ago, our board initiated
a conversation with Holy Family Lutheran School, which also serves
low-income children in our Lawndale community, about a possible
merger. The more we explored together the possible partnership,
the more excited we became. Our organizational missions are
surprisingly similar: to provide faith-based, affordable, quality
elementary education to the children of North Lawndale and surrounding
neighborhoods.
This past Friday, our board
voted overwhelmingly to approve the merger with Holy Family Lutheran
School. This spring, St. Gregory students will register for fall
classes at the newly named Holy Family School, about a mile away in
north Lawndale.
The decision was made after
much prayer, discussion, and conversation. Bishop Lee
wholeheartedly supports our decision, saying “Bishop Wayne Miller of
the Chicago Metro Synod (ELCA) and I see this venture as a unique
opportunity to serve the children and families of North Lawndale, and
in doing so model in the best way possible the spirit and promise of
our churches as envisioned in Called to Common Mission.”
Our students will benefit
greatly from this new opportunity. Holy Family just completed a
state-of-the art facility, recognized by Chicago Building Congress in
2008 as Chicago's best real estate project under $10 million. The
school is located in the Homan Square development, across the street
from a new charter high school, and close to the Homan Square Community
Center.
In addition, St. Gregory
students will have access to a safe learning environment with a
playground, gym, library, art and music rooms, and science and computer
labs. The combined school will have an expected enrollment of 250
students next year in grades K-8. This greater scale will provide a
significantly lower cost per student, while strengthening the overall
program.
As St. Gregory joins with Holy
Family, your contributions will reach more at-risk youth and also
improve the quality of education through a rich variety of school and
after-school programming. I see God’s hand at work in the new
partnership, and I invite you to learn more about the new opportunities
that your resources provide our youth. Look for more detailed
information in the coming weeks about this exciting development.
Please call or email me with your questions.
Sincerely,
Fr. Ken Erickson

Other News
Two of our 8th grade students have received the prestigious Daniel
Murphy scholarship. Jerami Bates and Elijah Morris-Knight both
show academic promise and leadership capabilities. Jerami is
considering St. John's Military Academy in Wisconsin (an Episcopal
school), and Elijah is considering Providence St. Mel.
OUR MISSION
St.
Gregory's mission is to provide a low cost, faith-based elementary
education to boys from resource-poor communities, preparing them for
success in competitive and selective high schools and good
colleges. By offering a faith-based private-school education
to
children whose families would otherwise not be able to provide this
option, we seek to level the playing field and give our students the
opportunity for a productive, rewarding and healthy adulthood.
THE ST. GREGORY EXPERIENCE
St.
Gregory's offers a low cost Kindergarten through Eighth grade
education, with emphasis on reading, writing, critical thinking, and
math, with a maximum of 15 students per classroom. Instruction is
aligned with the Illinois State Standards. We supplement our academic
program with a continuum of activities designed to enhance the growth
of our students and their preparedness for real-world challenges.
St.
Gregory students graduate with the knowledge, skills and strength of
character to set and pursue goals, achieve success in school and life
and go on to become good husbands, fathers, and contributors
to
their community. When students are admitted to St. Gregory,
they
are often functioning below grade level. While we cannot admit every
student, we exist to provide opportunity to the boys who are not
currently realizing their full academic potential. We work diligently
to bring them to grade level and send them on the best private and
selective high schools in Chicagoland. |
